#MyMusicStory - Wish You Were Here

We’ve been receiving dozens of stories from people coast to coast about the transformative power of music. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and we are publishing a story every day in May.

When I was small...very small in Montreal, my mom’s youngest brother Denis was passed away in a very tragic way. This story isn’t about that. But he was my godfather and I inherited his stereo along with some 8Tracks. One, in particular, had an otherworldly quality to it that kept me coming back to it over and over. Each listen would reveal another layer and transported to yet another world it seemed.  I would listen to War, Moody Blues and toggled up and down the FM dial hearing songs like Fox On The Run by Sweet all the way to Tragedy by The Bee Gees. Even though I was only 6, I kept that stereo’s green dial on every minute I could.

Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd was my prized possession. The album cover featuring a business handshake with on of the men on fire (mind blowing to me). English is my second language and wasn’t fully formed for me at that age but many years later it dawned on me what “Wish you were here” could have meant to a small boy who had lost his uncle and who’s name he shares.
