AMP4LIFE
Creating Community through Music, Stories and Science.
Delivered in collaboration with music therapists, AMP4Life is a program to address mental health challenges facing Long Term Care facilities.
The program uses music therapy, storytelling and songs to engage residents and focuses on improving wellness and reducing stress and anxiety levels. It helps the residents enhance their interpersonal skills and increase their connection with others by sharing stories.
Helping the Most Vulnerable Thrive
The COVID-19 pandemic led to a mental health crisis that directly impacted long-term care facilities, healthcare workers, and vulnerable communities across Canada.
We believe that music and music therapy can make a difference so we partnered with the Canadian Music Therapy Fund to design a program that would improve health, wellness and mental well-being through storytelling, music and connection to help some of our most vulnerable population thrive in a post-pandemic environment.
How Music Helps
We have learned through experts how music heals us and touches and inspires the human spirit. Various studies suggest:
Music therapy and music-related activities foster enjoyment, socialization, well-being and improvement of mental health in older populations.
Studies suggest active music participation by seniors contributes to psychological well-being and mental health.
Listening to or singing songs can provide emotional and behavioural benefits for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
Music helps improve well-being, promoting a better quality of life and improving depressive symptoms.
How the Program Works
Through your donations, we can provide our program to residents of long-term care facilities. The program can consist of only music therapy sessions delivered on-site by certified music therapists, or you can also integrate our AMP4Life Book Club.
The AMP4Life Book Club uses short, easily digestible stories from our book Songs of Hope and Happiness to encourage sharing stories among the residents. These eight-week sessions bring the residents together with trained facilitators who read stories from the book and play the songs that inspired the story. Each week has a theme - love, hope, loss, growth - to help guide the following discussion, and participants are encouraged to share their own stories and songs.
AMP4Life was created to help improve mental wellness, increase social interaction, awaken memories, and spark creativity in long-term care residents year-round.
